Where would I find asbestos in my home?

We often hear about asbestos exposure from working in certain jobs or industries, so it can be easy to forget that asbestos can be found in our homes, as well. Although newer homes today are built with products that do not contain asbestos, older homes may still put people at risk of asbestos exposure if those products or materials are disturbed

Many building products and materials used in homes contained asbestos up until as recently as the 1970s. Exposure to asbestos can result in serious health problems, such as cancer. The health problems typically do not become known for quite some time after exposure, even up to several years.

Building materials

If you live in an older home, some common materials that might contain asbestos include:

  • Boilers
  • Joint compounds or cement
  • Floor tiles
  • Furnace ducts
  • Steampipe insulation

Decorative or soundproofing material sprayed on walls and ceilings may also contain asbestos. Scraping, drilling or sanding material on the walls or ceilings may release asbestos fibers.

Household products

Unfortunately, there is no way to remove asbestos from these older types of products without the help of a skilled professional. Doing so yourself could be quite dangerous.

Although most products today do not contain asbestos, those that do are required to have a caution label. Companies that make asbestos products that do not put a label on the products could be legally liable.

Developing a life-threatening disease due to asbestos exposure can result in huge medical bills, lost wages and extensive pain and suffering. Compensation may be available for these types of losses, and an experienced attorney can help.
