Last year, asbestos in Calgary made headlines after University of Calgary instructor Amelia Labbe died of asbestos related lung disease. CBC News gained access to internal university documents that revealed there is asbestos in older campus buildings. Renovations released dust and debris and have university workers worried about asbestos exposure in the wake of Labbe’s death.
If you work in an older building – no matter your job – you may have been exposed to asbestos during renovations or repairs. You may have been exposed to asbestos – at home or at work – that may make you ill now or decades from now. If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, legal representation is necessary to get you a fair settlement.
Mesothelioma Exposure Can Happen At Work or At Home
Older homes and buildings are very likely to have used asbestos in their construction. In older homes, asbestos can be in drywall or insulation, roof, tiles or in popcorn ceilings. If you’ve had home renovations and didn’t know about the asbestos or abatement wasn’t done prior, you may have been exposed.
At work, you could have been similarly exposed if you worked in an office or building where asbestos was present. And, depending on your profession, you may have been exposed as part of doing your job. If you worked in the one of the following industries – even briefly – you could have been exposed while at work:
- Auto Mechanics and Auto Workers
- Construction and Drywall Workers
- Sailors and Shipyard Workers
- Plumbers and Pipefitters
- Plant and Maintenance Workers
- Sheet Metal Workers and Machinists
- Boilermakers and Welders
- Carpenters and Electricians
Mesothelioma Exposure in Calgary Hospital
In addition to the troubling news that University of Calgary employees were exposed to asbestos that should have been abated prior to renovations, there have been other disturbing and headline making cases of asbestos exposure in Calgary.
Despite the city being aware the old building was contaminated with asbestos, old Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary was sold and then dangerous renovations conducted. Workers exposed to asbestos were provided only thin painters masks as asbestos protection – which is not near enough to prevent inhalation of the deadly substance. The workers were then told to eat in the areas they worked in and so would lunch without masks while sitting in the renovation rubble that was rife with asbestos.
Even worse, areas of the hospital that were left open during renovation saw patients exposed to asbestos dust from the renovations. Renovation workers came and went in the same elevators as patients. This exposed workers, patients and hospital staff to asbestos dust!
Mesothelioma Exposure in Calgary’s Roadways
It’s bad enough that you could be exposed to deadly asbestos fibers at work or in your own home, but finding out it’s in the very roads you drive on is disturbing. More than half the roads in and around Calgary are paved with asphalt that contains asbestos. As long as the roads stay intact, the asbestos stays put and isn’t putting anyone at risk.
The trouble comes when roads are renovated or need repair or maintenance. Once the asphalt is broken, the deadly fibers can be released and inhaled by road repair crews, pedestrians, nearby residents and even motorists. And because Calgary uses recycled asphalt, the contaminated road product continues to be recycled into your environment.
The same type of asphalt is used in Toronto and city officials there told residents to close doors and windows when roadwork was underway near their homes. But in Calgary, officials insist there is little risk and that the asphalt had been tested and ruled safe. Yet when the Calgary Sun newspaper asked for the report, it could not be produced by the city and no warnings are issued when roadwork is underway!
